Adapting to Evolving Global Evidence Requirements in Global
Medical Device Development Programs

The global marketplace for medical technology is increasingly focused on value demonstration as a prerequisite for market access and reimbursement. As medical technologies become more complex, payers are seeking comprehensive clinical and economic evidence to drive coverage, payment and market access decisions. Many payers and purchasers have also developed rigorous technology assessment processes that are used in the evaluation of medical devices and diagnostics. The global demand for evidence is accelerating, increasing the need for clinical and economic evidence to demonstrate value to health care stakeholders. As a result, medical device innovators must become more adept at appraising a product’s evidence needs early in development and determining the return on an investment in evidence. Innovative medical device companies are now enhancing their capabilities in evidence-based evaluation, building an infrastructure that aligns value-determination, value-demonstration and value-capture activities with evidence development processes. The panel will present case studies in using evidence-based value as a key input to portfolio management, product development and commercial launch processes within these organizations. The discussion will examine how medical device innovators are coordinating evidence-based value building activities and discuss strategies for integrating evidence development that are adapted to unique features of medical device innovation.
